How’s Aubby? GI, Allergy

Aubby playing in the curtain while looking out the front window.

I’m already tired just thinking of writing this. The ongoingness of Aubby’s GI allergy saga exhausts my brain.

Anyway.

Two big appointments yesterday, with Allergy and then with GI (Gastro-Intestinal).

The appointment with Allergy was about 5 minutes after her list of reactors were reviewed. No hives? No anaphylaxis except those two or three? Then she’s not anaphylactic, nor does she require an epi-pen.

Mind, this is her current list of reactors:

  • Corn–whole kernel, starch, syrup, pregelatinized corn (meds inactive ingredient — oxycodone, oxybutinin), polyester, etc.
  • Zarbees Cold & Cough
  • Zyrtec
  • Claritin
  • Dairy
  • Gluten
  • Chicken
  • Beef
  • Rice
  • Strawberry, red skinned fruit
  • Fragrance Mix II, Balsam of Peru
  • Furred pets

Allergy said, “None of this is allergic.” That her response to corn (puking), and to gluten (intussusceptions, bloating), and so on… isn’t what “allergic” is. Because the markers aren’t associated with any of it.

Oookaaay. I said, “Then it must be something ON food if not IN it.” They said something about what they said coming from evidence-based medicine — well, I’d freaking hope so, they’re medical. But I’ve done very well determining patterns. It’s kept her alive.

But I’m reaching a whole new stump point. If she’s not allergic to the foods she clearly has reactions to, then WHY IS SHE REACTING.

After her little brother was born, I started sharing his breastmilk with her through her gtube to help with weight gain and potentially to decrease any inflammation. Yesterday, after hearing her inflammatory markers actually tripled “since July”, which was around when Little Dude was born, I can only conclude that my own diet isn’t safe enough for her to have that addition in spite of it perking her up otherwise. Or, she now reacts to human milk protein, since she was determined lactose intolerant in summer 2018. But she’d started having chronic diarrhea before he was born, and breastmilk helped, and even more when at least 4 oz daily.

But even behind that supplementation, which I’m now determined to trial off for now, that still leaves the rest of the list of reactors. And an unhelpful allergist who gave up before she even tried, on account that it’s “not allergic”.

Okay. If it’s not allergic, then WHAT ELSE IS IT.

That’s my new question.

And it still leaves me two reasonings:

  1. In lieu of allergies, then it breaks down to 3 reactor groups: Corn and cross-contaminated corn items/foods/processing/whatever, Dairy, and Gluten.
  2. But what is common of all of those reactors? That’s the true question. And if it’s not that she’s “allergic” in that sense–

In a way, I actually find the allergist’s dismissal a profound relief.

Because that, IF ACCURATE, cuts down on a lot of confusion for me–

Because it takes a lot to research-examine internal processes than it does external.

So if it’s not IN, not an allergic reaction between her chemistry and the chemistry of those different reactors, then it’s something ON, IN COMMON WITH each other.

Which leaves us with how the GI appointment went. They’re just thinking Crohn’s.

And maybe it is, or is developing that way. Without a procedure with anesthesia, which they are reluctant to do for a child/child who has a trisomy, there cannot be a definitive answer until she’s older.

But she’s being scheduled for a CT to locate inflammation to further pinpoint their supposition of Crohn’s. But got an X-ray yesterday to check any constipation backlog.

But I don’t think it is, based on the “early signs” of Crohn’s that comes up when I look into that: no tender red bumps, the only time she had bloody stool was from a stomach bleed, her eyes are light sensitive not pained, and she doesn’t have arthritis.

Which brings me back to my thoughts following Allergy…

If it’s not IN her food, then it’s ON. And what’s in common, when excluding gluten intolerance, pet allergy, and semi-excluding lactose intolerance from her list of reactors?

  • Corn–whole kernel, starch, syrup, pregelatinized corn (meds inactive ingredient — oxycodone, oxybutinin), polyester, etc.
  • Zarbees Cold & Cough
  • Zyrtec
  • Claritin
  • Chicken
  • Beef
  • Rice
  • Strawberry, red skinned fruit
  • Fragrance Mix II, Balsam of Peru

Corn and corn cross-contaminants. And I recently encountered a piece linking corn to gluten intolerance. Interesting.

But also, the way in which beef, chicken, and corn and cross-contaminants are linked–

Well, farm critters eat corn, right? And corn and other foods are sprayed with different chemicals. The thought again leads me to her gut; in that, guts are very subject to poisons — pardon my strong word usage, I’m not trying to sound melodramatic.

But what may not be affecting most of the population may be affecting her (and others like her with similar reactors — the dairy-gluten-corn trifecta). Those folks are varied; corn lite, corn moderate, corn severe… but still can consume the danger foods, sometimes, if they’re sourced clean (no sprays, actually organic, etc.). And that’s what leads me to my question of what’s ON our food sources.

…In my opinion, the question could also explain the very true “gluten free fad” that isn’t even a fad at all.

From here, currently inquiring on the corn group I follow for their thoughts.

And GI called up with the X-ray results, and yes it shows a “large amount”. So this weekend shall include bowel cleanout.
